(Left) Marina City in April 1969. This image by Chicago photographer Lee Balterman for Life magazine was probably taken from the roof of Richard J. Daley Center three blocks south. 55 West Wacker (built in 1968) is in the lower left corner. Dearborn Street is at left. At far right, construction has just started on IBM Center. John Hancock Center can be seen in the distance at right.

In August 1969, at about the same time 500,000 hippies were attending the Woodstock Festival in New York, Mike Chunko was visiting Marina City with his mom. Here he is on the roof of the west tower, on the left with his mother (right) and family friends to her right. In the background is the roof of the east tower.

Besides what appears to be badly peeling paint on the mechanical penthouse behind the group, distinctive stripes radiate outward on the rooftop deck. (Photo by Ethel Daniels.)

Photo by Mike Chunko View from the model apartment. Mike took this photo from a model apartment in Marina City’s west tower. The Unitrin Building is at left. Lake Michigan is in the distance.
