THE BIOGRAPHY OF CHICAGO’S MARINA CITY

Marina City makes front page of Weekly Reader

Still in use today, Weekly Reader is a weekly educational magazine designed for pre-Kindergarten children. In 1962, it was called “My Weekly Reader” and in February, the 19th issue reported on the construction of Marina City.

“The world’s tallest apartment house is being built in Chicago,” read the cover story. “It will be called Marina City. About 900 families will live there.”

Illustrating the article were a photograph of the architectural model of Marina City by Hedrich-Blessing’s Bill Engdahl and a UPI photo showing construction of the east tower core.

On the back was a quiz that listed ten statements, with only six being true. (Marina City will be the world’s tallest apartment house, is being built in Chicago, will have two round towers, will be 61 stories high*, will be like a small city, and will have stores.)

*The 61st story is the roof. There is also a mechanical penthouse and levels below the first floor.
