Top five pets of renters
26-Jul-12 According to a national survey by Chicago-based apartments.com, of renters who have pets, these are the most popular...
- Small dog (under 25 pounds) 35.5%
- Cat 24.2%
- Large dog (more than 50 pounds) 13.6%
- Medium dog (26 to 50 pounds) 11.0%
- Fish 4.3%
The survey, the results of which were released on Thursday, found 43 percent of respondents are currently pet owners and another 25 percent are planning on getting a pet within the next year.
More than 34 percent of respondents said although they do not have a pet, they enjoy living in a pet-friendly building. Only 20 percent of renters who do not have a pet said they avoid buildings that allow pets.
Apartments.com says renters with pets are an increasing trend. According to Tammy Kotula, spokesperson for the national apartment listing service, Renters have made it clear that not accommodating a pet could be a deal breaker in their apartment search, and many apartment managers have taken this feedback into consideration and adjusted pet policies.
Most pet owners reported having no difficulty finding a pet-friendly apartment, but more than half had to pay a pet deposit and one-third had to pay more than $200.
